who we are:

Connecticut River Defenders

Connecticut River Defenders is a group of environmental social justice activists from the Connecticut River Valley and beyond.

We came together as individuals to bring attention to the urgent problems FirstLight’s Northfield Pumped Storage Station has been imposing on the Connecticut River and its ecosystem for over 50 years. We demand that our public servants charged with wildlife, water, recreation, and environmental protection remove themselves from their entanglements with FirstLight and the re-licensing process.

On June 1, 2022 members took direct action on the river risking arrest by breaching the fence at the site of FirstLight’s intake tunnel. We also participated in other actions including demonstrations, stand-outs, letters to the editor, educational handouts. We coalesced as a grass roots organizing and action group and became the Connecticut River Defenders in August 2022.
